Students were observing caterpillars.

We not only observed and learned from nature and the animals around our campus, but also tried to contribute to nature by cultivating and preserving caterpillars in our Nature Area.

In Grade One, we grew caterpillars of Common Bluebottle butterflies in class. We discovered what it takes to care for and raise caterpillars. After watching their caterpillars munch, crunch, and double in size, we witnessed a magical event when they entered the pupa stage and began their metamorphosis. At the end, the caterpillars emerged as beautiful butterflies.

To help contribute to the Nature Area, Grade Two were growing their Cosmos plants from seedlings. Each day, they watered and cared for their plants until Cosmos grew into beautiful flowers. Then, the students transplanted their flowers in the Nature Area. Interestingly, when we set the butterflies free, some of them quickly landed on the Cosmos flowers and enjoyed the honey.

To further support the wildlife, in Grade Three STEM class, we observed the trees and birds in the Nature Area and chose the bird we would like to feed. We studied their habits and their food preferences, then designed and built bird feeders with recycled materials, such as milk bottles and thin branches. After we hung our bird feeders on the trees, we used infrared cameras to observe the birds’ reactions and were delighted when they showed they liked the food and the shelters we provided.

Students explored the Nature Area to see some birds' habitat.

Following the ideals of the Satoyama Initiative, we sought to create a harmonious realm in which humans and wildlife can coexist and benefit from one another. It is through efforts like this that such a realm can be achieved.
