Pond to drink water.
Our Nature Area is home to a variety of birds, such as Collared Scops Owls, Malaysian Night Herons, and Muller's Barbet. During the winter months, when we are harvesting tomatoes, Taiwan Blue Magpies often visit the Crop Area in search of a meal. Additionally, students often grow beans in this area, which attract turtledoves to come and feed. We also plant a variety of grasses in the Crop Area to provide hiding places for insects and birds. Our nature-study teacher also plants dragon fruit in this area; however, they are often eaten by Formosan Masked Palm Civets before they can be harvested.
Aside from that, we also grow guavas and pomelos without the use of fertilizers. These fruits tend to be too small and hard for birds and civets; however, they are a favorite of squirrels due to their crunchiness. Additionally, we use the guavas to feed stick insects. The pomelos, which are also small, are not eaten by any animals; however, their leaves provide a home for Common Bluebottle butterflies.
As to the Glowing Pond, it is home to both fireflies and a variety of aquatic life such as Chinese Pond-Heron, Eurasian teal, Eastern Spot-billed Duck, fish, and crabs. We were even lucky enough to witness some Chinese Pond-Herons flying around the pond in search of a suitable landing spot while exploring the Nature Area with our teachers.
Our Nature Area is a prime example of successful human-animal coexistence. We provide the necessities of life for animals while respecting and preserving their habitats.
