Peaceful Coexistence in Our Daily Lives
◆ Agri-Food Education and Nature Study Lessons
Since Grade 1, we have been exploring the Nature Area and learning about plants, their life cycles, and the ecological system.
In Grade 2 and Grade 3, we began to plant vegetables such as mushrooms, carrots, and beans, then harvested and cooked them as they grew. As part of our Agri-Food Education, we were taught how to keep our crops safe from harm without killing the bugs. We used hot pepper bug repellent to drive away some worms and ants, but still understood that these were living creatures which we, as humans, had the responsibility to care for. We learned that if we could grow our own food, we could also share it with these animals and insects.
Instead, they pulled up weeds to
make vegetables grow healthier.
without using pesticide or fertilizer.
in promoting firefly protection.
In Grade 4, we went to Glowing Pond to observe aquatic animals and insects. The most memorable part of the experience was seeing fireflies at night. Teachers gathered us for a night tour. When we arrived, we were amazed by the sight of fireflies like stars landing on the earth. Fireflies are such fragile and wonderful creatures that we felt the desire to protect their habitat so we could all appreciate their presence.
