◆  Protecting Fireflies in Glowing Pond

Glowing Pond

Glowing Pond is renowned for its fireflies, which are a type of bioluminescent beetle. Fireflies require an environment that is both clean and undisturbed in order to survive, and it took many years of work by teachers and staff to create the ideal habitat. Every May, Grade 4 teachers lead their students to visit Glowing Pond at night to observe these mysterious creatures in their natural environment.

Glowing Pond is a unique wetland. It has its own ecosystem that is home to many species, such as waterbirds, fish, and aquatic plants. Wetlands are incredibly important for the balance of the environment, as they provide a habitat for fish to reproduce and aquatic plants to grow, while also attracting birds, such as Crested goshawk, to come to bathe and forage for food. The presence of a thriving wetland ecosystem is therefore a sign of a healthy environment.
