The Lethocerus Deyrollei

The Lethocerus deyrollei, an endangered species, is the largest insect in Taiwan and has been considered a "mythical creature" as it disappeared for almost 30 years. The most crucial aspect is that it can survive only in non-toxic, clean waters. In the past few decades, industrial development, extensive use of pesticides in agriculture and road construction have caused the Lethocerus deyrollei's disappearance and extinction, emphasizing the need to safeguard its living environment. The Lethocerus deyrollei is a carnivorous insect that injects digestive juices into its prey after capturing it, breaking down the prey's tissues and flesh, and then sucking it up with its tubular mouth, which can cause severe pain when stung. It is an essential environmental indicator species in the aquatic ecosystem, feeding on aquatic insects, fish, shrimp, and frogs. They are highly sensitive to environmental changes and are nearly extinct due to the use of pesticides, reduction of paddy field area, lake eutrophication, rural road development, street light installation, and other human-made environmental disturbances. In the last two years, conservationists in Taiwan have been successful in steadily increasing the population and have acquired more knowledge about the Lethocerus deyrollei's ecological habits.

Though we cannot discover the Lethocerus deyrollei in our campus,
there are Rhinoceros beetles at our school.
