Congratulations, Graduates!

國際處主任 賴國宜

Although the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games have been postponed for a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, our Kang Chiao International Culture Week, under the theme“ A History of the Olympic Games,” will still be held after the final assessment. By learning the origin and development of the world's foremost sporting event and experiencing the opening ceremony and the latest Olympic sport, surfing, we hope the students will appreciate the spirit of the Olympic Games – be the best you can.

Congratulations to all our grade six students as they begin their middle school soon. What have their favorite subjects, and most unforgettable events been throughout their six years? Read the special issue A Moment in Time, from the graduates of the English Reporter Club to share in the Grade 6 graduates' most memorable experiences at Qingshan Campus.

We would like to thank all our parents for their support during this challenging semester. We wish you and your family a safe and happy summer vacation!

A History of the Olympic Games

Do you know what the world's foremost sports competition is? If not, here are some clues. It is held every four years, alternating between the Summer and Winter Games every two years during the four-year period. There are more than 200 nations and thousands of athletes participating in a variety of sports events. The symbol of this international competition is 5 colorful rings linked together. That’s right! It’s the Olympics.

Under the theme “A History of the Olympic Games”, we designed three stations at English Village called “The Origins and Development of the Olympics”, “Olympic Opening Ceremony” and “Surfing at the Olympic Games.” Our aim was for students to learn the history of the Olympic Games, understand why they are considered the most important sporting event of all time and best of all, participate in the latest Olympic event, surfing.

The Origins and Development of the Olympics

In groups, the students needed to discuss some big milestones in Olympic Games history - When did the Olympic Games start? Who invented it? When could women start participating? Which traditional sports were inherited from the ancient Olympics and passed down through time until today? After that, students found all the answers in a short video about the history of the Olympic Games. After becoming more familiar with the origins of the Olympics, students competed in groups to test their knowledge of Olympic history.

Olympic Opening Ceremony

When it comes to the Olympics, one must give special mention to the spectacular opening ceremony. So what happens in an Olympic Games opening ceremony? At this station, students had the chance to experience one. They watched a short video of all the Olympic opening ceremonies from 1908 to 2016, took the oath, and learned the meaning of the Olympic rings symbol. They were surprised by how creatively the Olympic flame was lit, how fancy the performances were and how solemnly the athletes took their oaths. After learning about the opening ceremony, we were so happy to hear our students share what it means to be a good sport and always try your best.

Surfing at the Olympic Games

Many of the students are familiar with some sports at the Olympic Games, but probably not the latest one. Surfing was approved to be one of the five new sports at the 2020 Olympic Games. Nothing sounds better than surfing in the water on hot summer days. Therefore, our students participated in a surfing competition. Each class was divided into 5 groups to represent 5 different countries. After the rules were announced, all the players tried their best to focus and keep their balance on a surfboard. The activity showed the students that sports require their physical strength as well as their concentration to do well. At the end, the winning group received the laurel, just like the champions got during the ancient Olympic Games.

International Culture Week is an essential event for the International Department at the end of each school year. We hope to familiarize our students with the international community and have a global vision for all cultures and events. With the diversity of knowledge learned in class and experienced in English Village, we believe our students will develop understanding, acceptance, and respect for multicultural concepts.
