Starting first grade is a significant step in every child’s learning journey. To support students adapt to new routines and expectations, our school held a two-week Transition Camp in early August. This program helped students gradually become familiar with their new environment and begin the school year with confidence.

Creating Comfort Through Exploration and Routine
Kang Chiao Spotlight

At Kang Chiao, students are grouped by English ability and attend class with peers from different homerooms. While this structure supports learning, it can feel unfamiliar at first for first graders. To ease the transition, Foreign English Teachers (FETs) and Chinese English Teachers (CETs) accompanied students to and from their English classrooms during the first three days. By the fourth day, many were walking independently. Some even held hands with new friends, smiling as they made their way down the hall.

In addition, students took part in campus exploration activities, where they visited key areas such as the library, playground, and other shared spaces. Afterward, they created 3D playground models in class and excitedly shared their designs. “This is my slide. It goes super fast!” or “I like to play on the jungle gym.” These moments helped students connect, practice English in context, and feel comfortable on campus.

Laying the Foundation for Confident Learning

To support students’ transition into structured classroom routines, teachers prepared interactive lessons focused on phonics and foundational English. One FET shared, “I was surprised by how much phonics knowledge students brought in this year. Most students could already build simple words or even short sentences.” Another enjoyable moment was story time, when students listened with wide-eyed excitement and laughed at the funny parts. One CET mentioned that her students proudly showed her the origami animals they had folded in the FET’s class, which they earned as a reward for completing their writing tasks. These joyful learning moments helped students build confidence, connect with teachers, and find joy in using English.

Partnering with Parents

We believe that strong parent-teacher communication is key to student success. Before the school year began, CETs reached out to parents to better understand each student’s background and learning needs. Through the e-communication book and official Line groups, teachers continue to keep parents informed and connected. At home, parents can support their children by helping them prepare materials, reviewing daily routines, and encouraging independence.

Now that school is underway, it’s heartwarming to see how much our first graders have grown in just a few weeks. With continued support from both teachers and parents, we believe each child will enjoy learning, feel confident at school, and build a strong foundation for future success.

New Beginning, New Adventure

We wish everyone a warm welcome to the new school year! For our first graders, it marks a big step moving from the playful world of kindergarten into the more structured life of elementary school. It's natural for children to need time to adjust, and that's where your steady support makes all the difference. Stay connected with us: join our parent-teacher conference, check the e-communication book, and keep in touch with teachers. When home and school work hand in hand, children grow with confidence and joy.

This year, we also continue our Hooked on Books program. Many young "Millionaire Club" readers have already emerged, and from this issue on, they will share their favorite books with us. Together, let's keep the love of reading alive!!
