Helping to Save Planet Earth

國際處主任 賴國宜

One of the biggest problems in the world today is the staggering amount of trash that humans produce. Our grade two students learned about the impact of waste and how to protect the environment by reducing, reusing and recycling. They were eager to communicate their findings and persuade more people to join them to build a more sustainable world.

Reading comprehension plays a crucial part in most English tests. The unseen readings especially cause panic for some students. Besides reading and practicing more, Mr. Claassen shares some test taking strategies that can help students to feel more comfortable when facing the challenges of an unseen passage.

Reading comprehension plays a pivotal part in many important examinations and study assessments. Doing well in the comprehension section is certain to enhance a student’s overall score in most of these tests and be a real confidence booster.

In our midterm and final examinations we generally have an unseen reading comprehension section, typically the last section on the test. In an unseen reading section, there is a passage centered around a topic, theme, or skill students have been exposed to prior to the examination. Along with the reading, are questions associated with the text. Students need to read and understand the passage in order to answer the questions.

Many parents and students wonder how to best prepare for this section in the test since it’s an unfamiliar reading. Students find these passages daunting, difficult to comprehend, and struggle to answer the related questions. In this article, we will discuss a few tips to handle these unseen reading comprehensions.

Tips for Dealing with Unseen Reading Comprehensions:

1. Read the questions first

Why read the questions before the passage? Doing this will save a reader time as they know what they are reading for! It also helps a reader focus on the information needed to answer the questions.

2. Pay attention to the first and last paragraphs of longer passages

Most of the passages encountered in the comprehension section will be short, but one or two will be long. If there is not enough time, read the opening and closing paragraphs and scan the middle. The first and the last paragraphs contain the main idea for most passages. Then, go back and read body paragraphs more carefully if the questions call for it.

3. Use context to help you

If a question asks about a particular line, don't go back into the passage and read just that line. Instead, read at least 2 sentences before and after the line in question, so as to comprehend what the author is trying to say. This will help a reader arrive at the answer with better accuracy.

4. Sharpen your skills through reading

Remember, the biggest challenge with reading comprehensions is the total word count of the passage. This can be scary at times and cause panic in the exam. It is extremely important to take a deep breath and be prepared for such challenges. An important point while reading is to maintain your focus and attention. This can be developed only with a good amount of practice.

Reading more often and reading in diverse areas will help in increasing understanding related to other areas in addition to the areas you might be familiar with. Read online journals, magazines, books and newspapers. The more a person reads and practices, the better their ability will be to filter out irrelevant information.

5. Work on your vocabulary

Try to increase vocabulary (general and area specific). Remember, this is another long-term strategy that requires dedication and application. It is not possible to improve reading skills overnight. Thus, it is extremely important to build core language skills in order to develop into a master reader.

Finally, students should use the weekend workbook questions as practice to check their level of proficiency.
